The Las Vegas Strip

The Strip is probably the most iconic symbol of all in Las Vegas and most of the time it is seen by car on the way from point A to point B. A lot of the character of the Strip can be missed by car however, which makes this a great place to take in on your next run. Starting on the "New" part of the strip as defined by the south end of Las Vegas Boulevard by Mandalay Bay up to the north end by Treasure Island crossing over to the Wynn and then returning south on the Strip to the area near the Tropicana. Many sights can be seen on this trek and it will give you a good work out with climbing stairs on the side street crossovers to sprinting to beat the lights. Especially nice is running past the fountains of the Bellagio and the volcano at the Mirage. Depending on what time of year you run, you can get cooled off periodically by misters spraying a fog of mist on you along the strip and there are many places to duck into to buy water or your hydration beverage of choice so leave your water bottle at home but make sure you bring your camera to take pictures of some interesting scenery.

Red Rock Canyon

Red Rock Canyon is a narrow valley that lies just about 15 miles west of downtown Las Vegas and is one of the most scenic places to run in Southern Nevada. There are many options at Red Rock to run with, you can take the 13 mile paved road that runs through the park or you can take one of it's 22 trails that range from difficult and very technical to the weekend warrior stroll through the dirt. Most of the trails range in mileage from 3 to 7 miles including one of the toughest trails Turtlehead Peak Trail which is 5 miles and very strenuous. What ever your choice may be the views are breath taking so bring a camera and bring your own water. At times you might come across a wild burro or see a Roadrunner pass in front of you.

Green Valley

Green Valley is a city just outside of Las Vegas that is home to outstanding residential living. If you are in the area the community is a safe place to log some miles and take in a different side of Las Vegas. Green Valley High School has a track that is open in the early morning from 4:30am to 8:00am and then opens again after the last high school practice on the field. So if you are working on tempo or mile repeats this is a great facility to do it in and it is free.

Summerlin

Bootleg Canyon

Bootleg Canyon Mountain is an extensive network of trails located in Boulder City, Nevada and is shared by foot traffic and bicycle. Located there is a World Famous Mountain Bike park. Boulder City is located approximately 40 minutes south east of Las Vegas by the Hoover Dam and beautiful Lake Mead. The season is year round, however, temperatures average around 100 degrees Fahrenheit from June through August, so mid-day riding or running is difficult. If you do decide to come in the summer be sure to bring plenty of water and maybe some head lamps for a night run or ride. There are 15 trails at Bootleg Canyon Mountain and all of them are challenging to a certain degree

Charleston Peak South Loop

From the Mirage on Las Vegas Boulevard (the Strip) go north 1.5 miles and turn left (west) onto Sahara. In less than one mile, turn right (north) onto I-15. Take I-15 two miles to US 95. Take US 95 north 14 miles to State Route 157. Go left on 157, drive 21 miles, and turn right into Cathedral Rock Picnic Area. The trail takes you to the highest point in southern Nevada. You’re almost 10,000 feet above Las Vegas. Once you reach the meadows, the run becomes easy. The last half-mile is very strenuous, but the views from the peak make it all worthwhile. The South Loop Trail climbs the steep slope to the ridge. It then heads west through the Meadows and into a forest. Near the treeline, the wind has reduced bristlecone trees to dwarf size. Once above the treeline, the trail traverses to the final push to the peak.

White Rock to Willow Springs

18 miles W of Las Vegas Blvd. on Charleston Ave.This is a nice workout, as you work your way down the slopes, across the (normally) dry streambed, and back up the slope heading into Willow Springs. You'll pass signs showing your turns to Grand Circle, Icebox and Lost Creek. Continue on this single track, mostly soil trail past the signs & drop down to join the Willow Springs loop which leads to the picnic area. Mileage is just about 4.5 miles.

The Slots

About 12 miles from the strip or downtown Las Vegas, take I-15 N past the spaghetti bowl (95/I-15/515 junction) to 95 N toward Reno. The road noise fades away as you enter the narrow slot canyon (30" wide in places), which is always cool and shady with the towering cliffs above. Leaving the slots, there is one solitary utility line strung overhead, then you're all alone except for the wildlife who live in this canyon. During the week, it is isolated and quiet, a perfect way to enjoy the lush canyon filled with junipers, pinions, Joshua trees, wildflowers and blooming shrubs. The round trip adventure is just at 5 miles and is very rustic, bring water.
